Material Upgrade: Why 35MnBH Steel Dominates Heavy-Duty Excavator Chain Applications

2026-06-02

Manganese steel is a high-strength structural alloy with reliable tensile strength, wear resistance and toughness for general mechanical parts. As a typical refined manganese steel, 40Mn2 features stable mechanical properties and good machinability. Adaptable to low-load, low-wear scenarios, it is widely used for small excavator chains and standard earthwork chains in routine urban and light earthmoving construction.

By comparison, 35MnBH is a high-performance manganese-boron alloy, whose core advantage lies in added boron elements. Trace boron greatly improves steel hardenability, doubling the quenching performance of conventional manganese steel. In quenching and tempering treatment, 35MnBH delivers uniform hardness and stable internal structure, avoiding common defects of ordinary manganese steel such as uneven hardness, stress concentration and brittle fracture.

Such performance gaps form clear application edge in the industry. Restricted by limited hardenability and wear resistance, 40Mn2 is only suitable for construction working conditions, serving as the preferred material for small-tonnage and ordinary earthwork chains with low loads and frequent replacement cycles.

In contrast, 35MnBH is of excellent wear resistance, impact resistance and fatigue durability, ideal for heavy-load and harsh working environments. Mining and heavy rock engineering subject excavator chains to extreme loads, strong impact and persistent friction. Only 35MnBH can adapt to such harsh conditions, effectively preventing chain stretching, wear and fracture, and greatly extending service life. Thus, all large-tonnage and mining-grade excavator chains exclusively adopt 35MnBH materials.

Industry insiders state that as construction machinery develops toward large-scale and heavy-duty design, the market demand for high-stability, long-life accessory materials keeps growing. The performance advantages of manganese-boron steel over traditional manganese steel are increasingly prominent in field use. The classified application of 35MnBH and 40Mn2 standardizes chain production, improves equipment efficiency and reduces maintenance costs. In the long run, high-performance manganese-boron alloys will gradually replace ordinary manganese steel to dominate high-end heavy-duty excavator undercarriage accessories.

With machinery market trending toward large-scale and heavy-duty operation, the industry has raised higher requirements for the stability and service life. As a professional manufacturer focusing on high-quality engineering parts, ZHONGKAI MACHINERY always adheres to strict material selection and quality control standards. We fully leverage the superior performance of 35MnBH steel and the cost-effective advantages of 40Mn2 steel  to achieve classified and standardized production of excavator/Dozer chains for different working conditions. This precise material matching effectively improves equipment operation stability, reduces equipment failure rates and overall maintenance costs. ZHONGKAI MACHINERY will continue to rely on premium material application and sophisticated craftsmanship to lead the upgrading of high-durability construction machinery undercarriage parts.
