How Can I Inspect the Wear on the Sprockets?

2024-07-31

While accelerated wear on the sprockets is uncommon, it is important to regularly check this component for any signs of damage or wear. To inspect the wear on a sprocket, the primary area to examine is the teeth that interact with the track on your machine. If the sprocket is worn, the teeth will appear more pointed and sharp, whereas a new sprocket will have more rounded teeth. This can be seen in the two examples below.

Here are some ways to inspect sprocket wear:
  • Tooth faces
Look for a shiny strip on each tooth, around the pitch circle diameter. This indicates wear. Other signs of wear include sharpened edges, rough surfaces, or elongated tooth profiles.
  • Depth of wear
If the wear is 10% of the dimension, the sprocket may need to be replaced.
  • Alignment
Misaligned sprockets can cause premature chain wear. You can use a straight edge across the machined faces of the sprockets, or a nylon line or laser sight tool to check alignment.
  • Wear indicator pins
Some sprockets have wear indicator pins on the thrust faces of the teeth. As the sprocket wears, the pin will Get closer to the edge of the tooth, eventually protruding from the side. When this happens, it's time to replace the sprocket.

It is particularly crucial to assess the sprockets when replacing the tracks on your machine. A worn sprocket can hasten the wear of the track links and lead to your tracks wearing out much faster. We always recommend replacing your sprockets when installing a new set of tracks on your machine, as this not only saves time and cost but also prevents premature wear and extends the uptime of your excavator.
