Material & Hardness: The Foundation of Wear Resistance

This is the most critical factor determining lifespan.

Look for Specific Steel Grades: Premium side cutters are made from quenched and tempered alloy steel with high hardness and good impact resistance. Industry-standard abrasion-resistant (AR) steel plates are a must.

Key Grades to Prioritize:

Hardox® (e.g., Hardox 450, 500) or equivalent brands (e.g., JFE Everhard, SSAB).

Domestic Standards like NM400, NM450, NM500 (where the number indicates the Brinell Hardness).

Demand Hardness Data: A reliable supplier must provide the Brinell Hardness (HB) value. For general to severe abrasive conditions, aim for HB 400-500. Higher hardness generally means better wear resistance but requires a balance with toughness to prevent cracking.

  • Purpose:They improve penetration by reducing the load on the machine's engine and hydraulics, and they prevent the Bucket sides from premature wear.
  • Types:Available as blade-type (for general purpose/long life) or with teeth (for easier penetration).
  • Attachment:Primarily Bolt-on (2, 4, or 6-bolt configurations) for easy field replacement, though some are weld-on.
  • Material:High-strength, wear-resistant, and heat-treated alloy steel (HRC 51-54).
  • Compatibility:Designed for specific OEM machines like CAT 320D (112-2488/112-2487), Komatsu PC200/PC300 (205-70-74180/207-70-34170), and EX200. 

Maintenance and Replacement

  • Inspection:Regularly check for sharp edges, cracks, or excessive thinning.
  • Flipping:To maximize service life, flip side cutters when wear approaches the bolt heads or, in the case of double-sided, when the edge becomes dull.
  • Replacement:Replace when wear limits are reached to avoid damage to the main bucket structure. 

For specific applications, such as high-impact mining, specialized, thicker, or specialized-designed cutters are recommended to maximize productivity.
